Story
Budapest in the thirties. The restaurant owner László hires the pianist András to play in his restaurant. Both men fall in love with the beautiful waitress Ilona who inspires András to his only composition. His song of Gloomy Sunday is, at first, loved and then feared, for its melancholic melody triggers off a chain of suicides. András, László and Ilona form a tenuous though touching personal and professional relationship in which both men share the love of the beautiful Ilona. After a few years, Nazi Germany captures Budapest and Hans returns. He is now an SS officer and responsible for organizing the transport of Budapest's Jews to the concentration camps.
